CATT-Acoustic – (Computer-Aided Theatre Technique)
CATT-Acoustic is a software package used for predicting acoustic performance in an air space; whether in an existing building or at the design stage of a new project. A pair of headphones can be used to listen to predicted audio at any seat in a church or auditorium when a building is still in the design stage.
This is called digital binaural auralization which Catt does by convolving an audio file with a predicted time response. Firstly a 3D model is generated to predict octave-band echograms by assigning frequency dependent acoustic properties to all internal surfaces.
Loudspeakers are inserted with source information to accurately predict the coverage and performance of the airspace. Catt-Acoustic features TUCT analysis software to calculate acoustic prediction parameters. TUCT includes early reflection and diffraction analysis in its calculations by taking into account reflections from small surfaces which are modelled using facets, an example being curved surfaces on ceiling diffusors.
Using different algorithms prediction can determine reverberation times, speech intelligibility, and other metrics as defined in ISO3382.
Catt is a very powerful tool used in Architectural Acoustics as well as sound system design.
